Harry Johannes Øyangen, age 88 of Rotterdam, NY, passed away at home on the morning of Friday, December 29, 2017. Harry, the eldest son of Johan Petter and Ruth Josefine Øyangen, was born in Trondheim, Norway on January 14, 1929. He had been a Merchant Marine for 11 years when he settled in Brooklyn, NY in 1956.
Harry met and married Ruth Aåmodt in 1957 at the Norwegian Seamen’s House in NYC. They were married for 45 years and had four children together before her passing in 2002. He was then married to Helen Schultz (Kestler) for seven years until her passing in 2011.
While raising their children in Sparrowbush, NY, Harry was an Oil Barge Captain, a member of the Sparrowbush Volunteer Fire Dept., and also owner/operator of Top Notch Lock Service. Additionally, he was a member of several local bowling leagues, a volunteer in Cub Scouts and Boy Scouts, and a parishioner of St. Peter’s Lutheran Church. Harry was also an avid accordion player, loved bowling, carpentry, and a good game of horseshoes.
Harry was also a lifetime member and former President of the Bernt Balchen district 3 Lodge #566 of The Sons of Norway.
He is survived by his four children: Roy Øyangen of Rotterdam, NY, Mona Øyangen-Faggione of Winston Salem, NC, Steven Øyangen of Medford, MA, Erik Øyangen of Boonton, NJ, along with their spouses/partners. He is also survived by his four grandchildren: Bridget R Kozlow of Garner, NC, Brian Øyangen of Watervliet, NY, Lisa Øyangen of Woodbridge, VA, and Anthony Faggione of Winston Salem, NC. Harry also has one great-grandchild, Benjamin Kozlow of Garner, NC, and several extended family members scattered around the U.S. and Norway.
Friends and family may pay their respects at a memorial service on January 13, 2018 from 10am-Noon at Gray-Parker Funeral Home located at 100 E Main St., Port Jervis, NY. There will be a graveside burial service immediately following at Pine Hill Cemetery in Sparrowbush, NY.
