Our mother had a life well-lived. She was a life-long resident of Port Jervis, N.Y. and member of St. Mary's Church where she was baptized, made first communion, and was confirmed. She graduated from St. Mary's School and Port Jervis High School. Our mother dedicated her life to nursing. She was a 1941 graduate of St. Vincent's Baby Hospital in New York City. She graduated from Orange County Community College in the 1960's and became a registered nurse. She was head nurse of the pediatrics department at St. Francis Hospital and Mercy Hospital. She also earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Behavioral Science from Mount St. Mary's College in Dobb's Ferry, N.Y. She also enjoyed working with the candy-stripers. Mom retired at 70 years old. After retiring, she continued working as a volunteer with the blood pressure clinic. Our mom was present at the birth of many little ones, welcoming them into our community. She exhibited skill, care, and compassion for children in times of sickness. She loved her career in nursing! Our mom simultaneously ran a business, inherited from her father, with her sister Mary for many years.
Even though our mom was a small town girl, she loved to travel! She had great companions as she globe trotted. Her travels included: China and walking the Great Wall, Japan, Europe, Africa, and Russia to name a few. She told us some of her favorite experiences were riding a camel with the great pyramids as a backdrop. She truly enjoyed floating down the Nile. She and her band of travelers also enjoyed numerous cruises. Great times were had by all!
Mom was a shopper! She took great pleasure in this pastime. Christmas was her favorite time of year. Shopping for this holiday began months ahead of time. She was an avid reader. She loved her yard and flowers. Especially her peonies. She liked to knit and made many an afghan and beautiful Irish knit sweaters to keep us all warm.
Words truly can't express how much she will be missed. We love our mother, and are also proud of the lady she was. She was strong and independent. Mom set such a good example to us with regard to love, caring, concern, and kindness toward others. She loved us and ours with all her heart. We are blessed by being her daughters.
Kathy and JoEllen
Those who love us don't go away,
They walk beside us every day.
Unseen, unheard, but always near,
Still loved, still missed, and very dear.
"Gra' agat mam."
