Joy Marie Cain

Mrs. Joy Marie (Owen) Cain

Port Jervis, NY

Joy Marie (Owen) Cain, aged 77 years and a longtime Port Jervis, New York resident and parishioner of St . Mary’s R.C. Church, passed away on January 8, 2019 in Morgantown, West Virginia after a year-long battle with cancer.  Joy’s beloved husband, James Francis “Frank” Cain passed away in 2010.  She is survived by her son James “Jim” Cain and daughter in law Roberta Renzelli-Cain and their children James, Francesca and Noelle, her daughter Marie Cain and Marie’s daughter Morgan Sicuro, Marie’s companion Edward “TJ” Long and his children Brittany, Courtney, and Kayla and her family, sister Judy and brother in law Blair “Bill” Hursh and their children Robbie (Athena), Sam, Nikki, Joe and Tammy and their families, brother William “Bill” Owen and his children Lisa (John) Owen Parker and Cristina (Mike) Owen Sturms and their families, sister Emily Turner’s children Brian (Kim) Turner and Tara McKernan and their families, brother in law and sister in law John and Catherine Cain and their children Theresa (Ted) Anderson and Marcie (Ryan) Fountaine and their families, and lastly her faithful dog Claire.  In addition to her husband Frank, Joy was predeceased by her sister Emily Turner, and parents Gordon and Marie Owen.

Born March 5, 1941 in Indiana, PA to Gordon and Marie Owen, she was given her name because her parents had so much “Joy” welcoming her.  She spent her early years in Towanda, PA, before moving to Lake Como, PA, graduating from Preston High School in 1959, while being selected “Best Looking” and “Most Musical” in her senior class. After high school, Joy attended radiology technician school, completed flight attendant training and was a telephone operator.  She married James Francis “Frank” Cain (Dec 2010) in 1964 in Dushore, PA. They welcomed their son, James in 1965 and daughter Marie in 1967 while in Northeastern Pennsylvania, before moving to Port Jervis in 1969.  Joy was a homemaker until returning to school to earn her Nursing Degree from Orange County Community College in 1977.  Joy devoted her entire nursing career to serving the ill in Port Jervis, NY, first at Dr. Sunnyside Hospital and subsequently at what is now Bon Secours Hospital.  She was a compassionate and well-respected nurse, primarily in the critical care and telemetry units, and proud to focus upon patients with cardiac disease until her retirement in 2011. Joy had a multitude of friends from all walks of life, particularly those among her healthcare colleagues.  She also made many new friends this year from those providing her care.

Joy loved music, playing violin, piano and percussion in her youth, then frequently going dancing with Frank before he passed away. While she kept current though her children and grandchildren, music from the 1950’s and 1960’s would most often be found playing, except during Christmas, when carols filled the air.  Joy loved Christmas. Her home was filled not only with music, but also decorations and the scents of the season.  She loved finding special treats for her loved ones.  However, once Christmas over, Joy would have liked to skip directly to summer.  Her favorite days were those spent in the warm sun with family and friends at the pool or beach.

Joy’s greatest love was her family.  She found great pride and pleasure from her children and grandchildren, particularly after her husband’s passing. She enjoyed being a “young” grandparent, even as she entered her 70’s.  Joy said she was not afraid of dying but was not ready yet to leave her family.  She was, however comforted by the knowledge of being welcomed into God’s warm embrace by her husband and parents, long awaiting their reunion.  While we too were not ready for Joy to leave us, given her “Be safe” at the conclusion of every conversation, we know that we now have gained the most dedicated guardian angel.  It is with tremendous sadness, tempered by the knowledge that this past year’s suffering has now ended, that we say goodbye to our dearest Mother, Grandmother, Sister, Aunt and Friend, Joy Marie (Owen) Cain, R.N.
