Bruce J. McDermott
Bruce J. McDermott passed away in his home on January 1, 2021 in Montague, NJ at the age of 74.
Bruce is survived by his beloved wife of fifty years, Rose “Chick” McDermott; son Mark and wife, Heather, of Middletown, New York as well as his son Jason of Montague, New Jersey. Bruce adored his grandchildren Gavin, Lucy, Holden, and Brodie. Bruce is also survived by a multitude of loved ones who came as friends and left as family. He is preceded in death by his parents Mark “Jimmy” and Mary McDermott of Paterson, New Jersey.
Bruce was born on November 8, 1946 in Paterson, New Jersey. He graduated from Paterson Technical and Vocational High School in 1964. He served in the Vietnam War with the Marine Corps before returning home to Chick. They married in 1970.
His children will remember him as a father who encouraged them to embrace experiences and capture memories, especially through family trips. Summers visiting the Jersey shore for fishing and crabbing. Winters spent snowmobiling in upstate New York. His grandchildren will lovingly remember him as a jokester who loved Harry Potter and hot dogs.
Bruce cared deeply about his community. At one time serving as little league coach, recreation director, and deputy mayor. He was accomplished at fixing up classic cars. He was especially proud of his 1965 Mustang and 1980 Corvette. He was an active and dedicated member of the Montague Seniors Club.
A celebration of Bruce’s life will be coordinated by his family at a later date. In lieu of flowers, please send donations to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.
