Obituary of Philip J. Fitzpatrick

Mr. Philip J. Fitzpatrick of Matamoras, PA a and 28 year resident of the area, died Thursday, December 23rd at Bon Secours Community Hospital. He was 54. He was born July 19, 1950 in Merrick, LI, NY the son of the late John and the late Catherine Haller Fitzpatrick. Phil was also predeceased by his stepfather Perry Hambel. He was married for 33 years to Judith Kroutil Fitzpatrick. Phil was the Director Of Support Services for the Delaware Valley School District. He was a member of the Upper Delaware Council Citizens Advisory Council and the first chairman of the Upper Delaware Council. He was a member of the Fontinalis Fly Fisherman's Club and a past member of the Matamoras Fire Department. He was a past member of the DVSD School Board. He was an active member and Past President and Treasurer of the Milford / Matamoras Rotary Club. He was a member of the Delaware Highlands Conservancy and a past member of Pennsylvanians Aware. Phil was a past Executive Director for the Pike County Chamber of Commerce. A family statement read: "Phil never did anything half-way. He loved his family deeply and treasured the time he spent with his friends. He was happiest in his garden, on free-flowing rivers, and being anywhere family and friends gathered. He was known for his big heart, his hearty laugh and his ability to get things done. He lived his life by these words, written by Theodore Roosevelt": "It is not the critic who counts, not the man who points out how the strong man stumbled, or where the doers of deeds could have done then better. The credit belongs to the man who is actually in the arena: whose face is marred by the dust and sweat and blood; who strives valiantly; who errs and comes short again and againwho knows the great enthusiams, the great devotions and spends himself in a worthy cause; who at the best, knows in the end the triumph of high achievement; and who, at the worst if he fails, at least fails while daring greatly, so that his place shall never be with those cold and timid souls who know neither victory nor defeat." Main St. Port Jervis on Sunday, December 26, 2 - 4pm & 7 -9pm,. Funeral services will be Monday, December 27th with a 10:00am Prayer at the Funeral Home followed by a Mass of the Resurrection at 11:00 AM in St. Joseph's R.C. Church, 307 Ave. F., Matamoras, PA with Rev. August A. Ricciardi officiating. Cremation will be at H.G. Smith Crematory, Stroudsburg, PA.
